8 things I'm always asked about social media

Over my years of being a social media manager I find I get asked the same questions over and over again and in an ever changing industry, where it can already be hard to keep up, it’s good to know the basics of social media.

So here are the questions you need to know the answers to:

1. Which platform should I be on?

The simple answer is, you should be on the platform your customers are on!

I can’t specify a platform for you here as there is no ‘one size fits all’ solution. It all comes down to knowing and understanding your ideal customer and what they engage on.

Facebook is a very broad and versatile platform and could work well for most businesses, where as Instagram is best for sharing visual content so if you are a lifestyle based company you many find you ideal customer here. Are you a B2B company, if so you may want to look at LinkedIn.

There is a bit of leg work involved in knowing your customers and where they hangout but it’s fundamental knowledge.

If you’re still not sure which platform is best for you, I can help, find me at www.bloomwithbb.com and we can work on it together.

2. Do I need to be on every platform?

With an endless list of platforms including, Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram and Youtube (I could go on) there is an overwhelming choice but being on every platform really isn’t necessary.

Social media is also a lot more time consuming that people realise so it’s better to take a strategic approach and focus your efforts on one or two platforms rather than spreading yourself too thin.

3. Why doesn’t anyone see my posts?

Now this really is the million dollar question!
There are so many reasons your content might not be getting great reach. Be honest with yourself when reading some of these possible reasons, do they apply to you:

● Honestly, your content might just be rubbish!

● You’re not engaging enough with your followers

● You don’t post consistently

● You’re using the wrong platform

● You’re not using relevant hashtags

4. How do I get people to comment on my posts?

The key to getting lots of comments on your posts is to create content that people feel compelled to respond to.

For a quick win ask your audience questions.
Here are some ideas:

● People like to talk about themselves, so ask them to share memories. For example, a travel business might ask, ‘What’s your favourite holiday destination?’

● Try ‘this or that’ questions relevant to your business e.g. a vineyard might post, ‘Our grapes are now ready to harvest’. But which do grape variety do you you prefer, red or white?’

5. How much time should I spend on social media every day?

Social media is time consuming but you don't want to end up in the black hole of scrolling and posting without purpose. It’s a good idea to spend at least 15-20 purposeful minutes on your business platforms a day.

✅ Use your time wisely, Answer DMs, respond to comments and follow relevant hashtags for inspiration.

🚫 DON’T Waste your time scrolling endlessly and comparing yourself to others.

6. What should I post on social media?

Remember, the most important thing is to create content that your customer wants to see. Something that inspires them to like, share, save or comment.

Here at Bloom with BB I get my clients to follow the 3 pillars when posting content.

See my blog ‘What is a social media strategy and do you need one?’ to find more about the 3 pillars and how it can help you create content your customers will engage with.

7. How often should I post on social media?

Consistency is key. It’s better to post once a week every week than to post every day for a fortnight and then go quiet for a month.

The more often you post, the more people will see your content and the faster your account will grow. BUT there is very little point churning out thoughtless content for the sake of it.

Also take a look at the insights available to you on your social media accounts. This will tell you when your audience are online, you can then tailor your posting to suit.

8. Is it too late to get started on social media?
